EDIT: Finished this piece out digitally - here's the final version! The original is below.
I've been wanting to do an illustration for Tam Lin, a Scottish ballad/folktale (I like Anais Mitchell's version, link) for a long time, and this seemed like the perfect opportunity. It's the story of Janet - a girl who sets out to rescue her lover Tam Lin from the captivity of fairies. The enchantments employed by the fairy queen to keep possession of Tam Lin transform him into various wild beasts in Janet's arms before he is finally restored to his human form, free to return with her to the mortal world.
Pencil and white charcoal on tinted paper, with a bit of digital color.
