Hey guys, here's 2 drawings of Chris O'neill. Better late than never, right? I've never met Chris but all I can say is that his work is superb!
I had a lot of fun this month trying to come up with different ideas everyday. Though my schedule got thrown out of whack towards the end and I wasn't able to keep up. I really enjoyed this project and every ones work. Some fantastic stuff was posted by everyone!
The song that came up for me was Fools Rush In by Elvis Presley. When I heard the line "When we met, I felt my life begin" the first thing that popped into my head was a seed sprouting. So I went with that :)
Hey guys, really sorry that I haven't been able to keep up lately. Having a 9-5, plus getting some Illustration work on the side doesn't leave me with as many hours on the day as I would like. But I'll catch up!
This is Corto Maltese, a character created by the amazing Hugo Pratt. Corto is a sea Captain adventuring during the early 20th Century. He is a "rogue with a heart of gold", reminds me a lot of "Mal" Captain of the Serenity in Firefly. Corto instinctively supports the disadvantaged and oppressed. His adventures are fascinating and easily rank at the top of any must read Graphic Novel lists. If by chance you happen to run into a copy of his adventures buy it immediately as they are pretty hard to find in the U.S. You will not be disappointed. Though don't buy the latest English translation of "The Ballad of The Salt Sea" it's just complete butchery of all time classic book. I <3 Corto Maltese!
The Lion of Natuba is character from Mario Vargas Llosa's "The War of The End of The World". He was born deformed with very short legs and a gigantic head. He walked around town on all fours, with his large head and long hair. Because of this people called him "Lion". He was incredibly brilliant and taught himself to read and write. Even though he would read and write letters for everyone in town he was never accepted.
He was almost killed by an enraged father after the Lion had expresses his love to his daughter. He was saved by The Caunselor(A man with a Christ like following) from then on the Lion lived the rest of his days in happiness next to his savior.
Here's a portrait of Horacio Quiroga, a fantastic latin american writer who excelled at portraying mental illness, hallucinatory states, death and the supernatural. His book of short stories "Stories of Love, Madness and Death" is incredibly dark and tragic. I highly recommend it
Here's Spider- Man at the scene of his greatest failure, the Brooklyn Bridge. Where his girlfriend Gwen Stacy is hurled off the tower by the Green Goblin. Spider- Man manages to catch her with his web shooter, he pulls her up thinking that he has saved her. But the whiplash from being caught in mid air has snapped her neck and killed her...
When I was around six years old every Saturday morning consisted of my sitting in front of the T.V and watching Gatchaman/G-Force/Science Ninja Team or whatever other name the show's had over the years. Depicted above is my favorite character from the show, Joe Condor/Dirk Daring (depending on translations). Second in command, a deadly sharp shooter with the eyes of an eagle, nerves of steel and overall bad-ass.
Bernie Fuchs is one of my all time favorite Illustrators, so I decided to pay him a little tribute by copying one of his drawings and adding a little bit of some month of love flare. Enjoy my feeble attempt at connecting with a true master.
